A Webding Mishap?

Well, I did choose webdings as my font for that last posting, but whenever I look at it, I can read it. I don't know what your problem is. So this is what I wrote; it's just a repeat of the last posting, in case you are interested. If you aren't, that's mok. I'm not offended.

Just Another Day

So there's not much news to report; I did sleep for about three hours straight this morning, with some naps as well, so although we got up around 4 a.m., I'm feeling relatively well rested. I think the bedtime bath did our little man some good, even if it was his second bath that day (due to a lovely blow-out). It really shouldn't surprise me that a bath will get him ready to sleep . . . I guess I just have to figure these things out on my own. Benjamin is getting bigger. He's starting to fit into his little 0-3 outfits, and his cheeks are getting a bit chubby. It's exciting to watch him grow and change from day to day, even if it is a little sad knowing he will never be this little again. Still--he is awake more often, and we get to see his eyes open sometimes (they are still that dark blue/grey newborn color). He doesn't really interact yet, but he does smile (and giggle) sometimes in his sleep. I live for those moments. He truly is the sweetest little guy, even if he keeps me up all night. Let's talk about ye olde breast pump. It's getting pretty old. Benji is eating mostly breast milk, with some formula (he doesn't show a real preference, although he was kind-of pukey after a bottle of formula last night). He'll nurse sometimes, and he is getting better at it, but it's a love-hate kind of thing. Sometimes he takes a good half-hour to eat, and I can't really nurse him in public. So I'm pumping a lot, which is a big pain--I'm supposed to do it every 2-3 hours. I know it's good for him, but there's the little nagging voice in the back of my brain that says, "You were given formula as a baby, and you turned out all right," and there's the fact that Costco formula, even at one can per week, costs less than the pump to rent. I don't know what we'll do or how long I can keep this up . . . we'll just see. It's better to have a sane mother than to be breast-fed, right?

Mary. I hear you loud and clear about the love-hate relationship with nursing. Ezra didn't nurse for the first month. I pumped all that time. In fact I pumped for 7 months every 3-4 hours. He did eventually learn how to nurse, but had already gotten used to the bottle by then so just nursed for going down to sleep.

With Micah...same thing. The kid however is the world's slowest eater. No, I don't have time to sit down and wait 45 min for him to eat while my toddler is wreaking havoc. However I learned a few tricks along the way. I rented the pump with Ezra for the first 5 months, and finally bought the pump n' style from Medela off of Ebay for $100. It's quite good, not hospital grade, but it did do the trick. Of course I gave up two months later, but I had the pump for Micah, and will probably have to use it for baby 3 if ever there will be one. The other trick I learned with Micah is that I pumped like crazy the first 3 weeks, so my milk supply was really high. I bought bags and froze all the milk. I stopped pumping at around 4 months by which time he had learned to nurse properly, nursed for another month and then had frozen milk supply until he was 7 months old (which is the recommended minimum for nursing). You may have turned out alright on formula, but there are significant health benefits to you if you nurse, like decreased risk of ovarian cancer. Anyway, not going to tell you what to do. Just letting you know it's possible and there are some cheaper ways to pump.

Hey Mary, I'm glad to be in on your blog now. Have you seen ours yet?

About your nursing woes, sorry to hear it's difficult for you. Eliana had a hard time at first, but then she nursed like a pro. I never liked pumping, and luckily didn't have to do it much. It's a tough decision. I will say that Eliana didn't get sick once the winters she was breast feeding. This winter she's had several ear infections.
