Some Days are Better Than Others

I don't know that I will ever catch up with my pictures; I guess I can call this resolution failed. The goal of it really was to simply take more pictures, though I just can't seem to do it every day. Even so, here are a few.

This is a picture I took when I thought Winter was over. Uh, not so much.

I took this at Primary Children's. I love gnomes.

This one is indicative of the bipolar Spring we have had thus far. The grass is green, but there's snow on top of it.

We have a magnolia tree hanging over our fence. Right now--it is beautiful. This was taken before most of them have bloomed.

Yesterday there was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the ACCESS program at the University of Utah. I was a part of this program in 1997, the year I graduated from high school. These are some of the most incredible women I have ever known, and I am profoundly grateful to know them.

4-15 @ ACCESS Shindig--My friends Melissa, Sara, Shelly and me

And here are a couple of pictures I took yesterday. I think they turned out pretty well. At least the one with the boy was in focus--that doesn't happen very often.

Me and my little love

Just me.
I'll try to do more later, though no guarantees.  Sorry.

Waves That Leave Me Out of Reach

I'm having a really hard time keeping up with the pictures.  I have missed several days, and I just haven't had time or energy to upload and edit and post.  Too much on my plate at the moment, and a lot of it has to do with work.  I love where I work, I really do, but they ask a lot of us.  For example, we are having "education groups" do presentations during our Staff Meetings.  These groups consist of people from all different areas of the unit--some nurses, some peds techs, some NPs, etc., etc.  It's cool doing a collaboration with them, and it's nice to see the presentations, but it's a lot of work.  I did it in February, and while we are only required to do one group per year, I signed up for two because I feel like I need to work extra hard to justify my pay.  I am an O.R. Tech II, which title I earned at IMC, but there just aren't the variety of cases and opportunities for advancement at Riverton.  So, rather than having a "pay freeze" or demotion (is that a word?) back to a Tech I, I am busting my butt trying to make them see that I am worth what they pay me.  It's not like I'm making bank or anything, but I have been with Intermountain Healthcare for nine years . . . I'd hope I'm making a little more than a new grad.

So anyway, with the education groups, our Unit Educator sent out an e-mail last month (just after I had finished with my February group), to tell us to get organized for May.  Of course, half of the members of the group were on their second go-round, and thus could "opt-out" of participating in the group, and most of them did.  I waited for a week or two, seriously considering opting-out, and when no one took charge, I realized I would have to.  I have been trying to put this group together, but one nurse in the group has not responded to any e-mails (and I have sent quite a few), one nurse only works at Riverton like once per month, and I just don't know if we'll ever be able to meet together.  I volunteered to do the Powerpoint, so I have to do that, but they don't trust us with internet access at work, so I can either complain about it to my boss (who might give me one-day access . . . sure, I can get it all done in a couple of hours.  No problem.) or I can do it at home, which I'm not too excited about either.  I don't get enough sleep as it is, and the only time I can do stuff like that is after the boy goes to bed.

Another thing I'm doing to justify my pay is to be a part of the Unit Council.  It's actually pretty fun--we plan the parties and talk about issues involving the various parts of the unit, etc.  Plus, the group is hilarious--we laugh a LOT during our meetings.  At the last meeting, I volunteered to make Thank You cards for our Doctors, since it was National Doctors' Day on March 30th.  I arranged for most everyone to be there to take a picture, then I made the cards at home using GIMP.  That took me a few hours, since I made them for all of the surgeons, dentists, and anesthesiologists who come to Riverton regularly (there were about 70).  That took me several hours (at home).  I tried to print them the next day, when I realized that I had reversed the picture, so the writing on the signs was backwards.  I should have let it go, but I felt the need to fix it.  So I spent another few hours at home fixing the pictures.  THEN, I had to print them, but the toner ran out, and we had to wait until they ordered and delivered more, then I had to get everyone to sign them . . . it has been a project.  Oh, I also purchased envelopes for said cards and printed the names on them at home.  And that's just one project for the Unit Council.  I usually have some kind of project or job every month, and yes, I volunteered to do it, so I don't feel like I can ask for reimbursement.  And the other thing is, my boss is so concerned about budget that she is always trying to send us home early, or making us take the day off, or sending us to work at other hospitals (floating), and yet she expects us to do all of this on top of our usual daily work, and to never go into overtime.  It's frustrating.

Easy as 1-2-3

I borrowed this from cute Sharon's blog (and yes, I think she's right about that sculpture being Mark Twain).  Enjoy.

Age: 32. Why do I feel so old?

Bed size:  Queen.  I'd like to upgrade to a King, but I'll have to be in a home larger than a 900 square foot apartment.

Chore you dislike: Scrubbing the tub.  I think it's the feet thing.  Feet gross me out.  Blood, guts, sputum, even pus (if it's not too stinky)--no problem.  But feet?  Nasty.  Especially my own.

Dogs: I love 'em.  I'm definitely more of a dog person than a cat person.  I'd like one eventually, but I have so much on my plate already that I just couldn't take good care of one right now.

Essential start to your day: Shower, Diet Coke.

Favorite color:  I go through phases of loving certain colors.  Currently, it's red.  I LOVE red.

Gold or silver: Silver, definitely, though I could go for white gold and/or platinum if I could afford it.

Height: 5 feet 9 inches, or 175 cm

Instruments you play(ed):  I think I was 6 when I started taking piano lessons.  I took them until I was about 14.  I still play the piano, though I'd consider myself a pretty mediocre player.  Also, I played the cello from 5-8th grade.  In 9th grade, I switched to the bass.  I played the bass throughout high school, then after I graduated, I just didn't have time for it anymore.

Job title: Surgical Technologist, a.k.a. O.R. Tech, or Scrub Tech.  When I finally get around to getting my national certification, I will be a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).  I know, super-exciting.

Kids:  If you can't tell, the love of my life is Monsieur Benjamin.  There might be more eventually.

Live:  Currently: Salt Lake City, UT.

Mom's name:  Renee

Nicknames: Mare, Mary Chewy, Hey You

Overnight hospital stays:  One for a freak episode of epiploic appendagitis in 2005, and a few days after the birth of the boy.  Although I have worked many nights in hospitals, I don't think that really counts.

Pet peeve:  Messy cords.  There are a lot of cords for monitoring in the O.R..  Tubes and wires and plugs, and they all get so tangled.  Velcro is my friend.

Quote from a movie:  "You're born into a family. You do not join them like you do the Marines."  C'mon, you know what it's from!

Righty or lefty: Righty

Siblings:  Rachael (35), Rebecca (33), John (would be 30), David (28) and Sarah (26).

Time you wake up: On weekdays, the alarm is set for 4:30 a.m. so I can get to work around 6:30.  I'll usually snooze for 15 minutes or so before I roll out of bed.  On weekends, I'll usually get up around 8, unless the boy decides he wants to get up early.  Like today--he decided that 3:45 would be a good time to get up.  Yeah, it's awesome.

Underwear:  Yes, thank you.  One word for you: Carinessa.  It's delightful.

Vegetables you don't like: Okra, Lima Beans and Black-Eyed Peas.

What makes you run late: Spending too long getting ready, mostly because I'm so slow to get going in the mornings.

X-rays you've had: Lots of teeth x-rays, a brain MRI, which lead to my PFO closure under fluoroscopy (a long, real-time x-ray), some when I dislocated my shoulder, and countless shots with a c-arm (x-rays taken in the OR).

Yummy food you make: banana bread, brownies, crêpes, salads, breadsticks, GORP, and I make a mean white sauce.

Zoo animal favorite: Elephants.  So cool.

The Wheel in the Sky Keeps on Turning

I haven't written lately, mostly because I'm behind on my pictures. That, and I'm busy trying to keep things afloat. Here are some of the pictures; I'll try to get the rest of them figured out.

3-1 Benji Napping

Benji has started taking naps again.  It's usually after 5pm, when he's been going all day and just crashes.  He's got a funky rash on his face, which I just don't know how to get rid of.  But he's still cute.

3-2 When the wheels come down.

This is where our tax refund went.  Remember the rims that Silvano came with?  The tires sucked in the snow, but I thought they were okay otherwise.  Allen insisted on getting new wheels and new tires.  $1,000 later . . . this is what I have.  Whatever.

3-3 Shamrock the house

I took a different route home from work, and I saw this street.  I thought it appropriate for this time of year.

3-6 Leprechaun or Gangster?  A little of both.
I got this fun hat @ Target (where else?), and he wore it for about 30 seconds.  The pictures didn't turn out very well, but at least he wore it for a while.

3-7 Winter Wonderland

We had a fairly big snow last week (and yes, I was grateful for decent tires that day).  I'm thankful it has melted--today was glorious, and I can feel spring in the air.

3-10 Frozen in Time

I came across this bronze statue of Albert Einstein while shopping the other day.  He was just so cool, I had to take a picture.

3-11 Whatever words I say, I will always love you
Oh, WinCo.  I don't know how I managed without you.  It's a beautiful thing.

And yesterday, I decided to take the boy out for a wee photo shoot at Gardner Village.  I got some cute ones, but this is one of my favorites:

3-12 More Wheels
I'll fill in the holes later; à+.

Steal My Kisses From You

I have a lot on my mind, but not a lot of energy to write about it.  Things have been really busy with work, trying to get the house in order, birthdays, and such.  I'll get pictures up soon, but I wanted to share something really cute.  I was walking through Winco with Benji in the cart today, and for some reason, I wanted to whistle.  I'm a terrible whistler--I can't keep a tune to save my life.  I'm okay with singing, but the whistling genes went to the boys in my family.  Anyway, whenever I try to whistle, I always end up trying to do the tune from Robin Hood (the Disney version).  And when I'd start whistling it, Benji would pull me down (usually by my shirt) and give me a kiss.  I don't know why, and I don't think it'll last very long since he realizes that I'm now doing it as a ploy to get kisses.  But it's so sweet, especially from a little dude who doesn't show a lot of affection.

I love this little leprechaun.
