I Gotta Feeling

Getting organized is a big deal.  I'm still working on getting our house organized; it is mostly there, but there is a serious lack of shelving.  As such, things end up in random corners, or stuck in our very cold garage {which is doubling as a walk-in freezer of late . . . perfect for chilling beverages!}.  I did go to IKEA with Peggy and Brittany as part of my girls' day out birthday celebration {followed by a late lunch @ Texas Roadhouse and Les Misérables @ Jordan Landing, all of which was lovely except for the part where Benji pooped his pants and I nearly broke the diaper-changing station in the bathroom by putting my 65lb boy on it}, and bought some super-cheap shelves for the kitchen.  No, I haven't hung them yet; I need a stud-finder and a level.   I need to get some real shelves for my office and for the family room.  We also need a couch and an entertainment center that doesn't involve cardboard.  Actually, we have a weird corner in the family room that needs to be turned into a closet, so we'd need shelves and lighting and doors . . . and the list goes on and on.  There is a lot to do, and not enough time or money to do it.  Apparently there are always projects when one has a house; and don't even get me started on the yard situation.  This is good and bad, but I'm very grateful to even have a house in which I can do projects.

There are a lot of other aspects of my life I would like to organize, and not just in a plastic-bin sort of way {though bins can be extremely helpful!}.  Fabulous people are organized, so I should be, too!  As a side note, I was just looking down at my very dry and unpretty hands.  Fabulous people take care of their nails, and since a) I get paid this week and b) it's my birthday on Saturday, I will be getting a mani-pedi at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Okay, back to the purpose of my writing at this very late hour.  I'm actually at work, and it is quiet tonight {yay!}.  I should be "putting my feet up," or preparing my lesson for Primary tomorrow, but I'd rather write.  I have been bitten by the writing bug, and there's a lot I want to say.  Eventually I'd like to become one of those bloggers who actually get paid to write, though I don't see that happening for some time; at least until I have something I can sell besides my wit and honesty.

Until I can get into a real writing routine, I'd like to set some goals to help me get organized.  Yes, yes, I said I wasn't setting number goals, and I won't be measuring these.  They are more like guidelines, anyway {please tell me you know that quote!}.

My goal is to write once per week.  For journaling purposes, I think I should do a Weekend Wrap-Up {"What is a week-end?" --the Dowager Countess} to write about what actually happened during that period of time.  It's mostly work, school, cleaning, laundry, etc., but there are the occasional great things that tend to get missed, like my road trip to Boise last week with Allison.  That was a first; I have never gone to such significant lengths to go to a concert, but is was so great!  There's also the Fabulous Factor {FF}.  I think I'll go from using the fQ {Fabulousness Quotient} to the FF.  fQ sounds precariously close to something I really shouldn't say, and I can leave out the -ness when using FF.  Just to clarify--I am using Fabulous as a noun, not an adjective, since "Fabulous" is a state-of-being.  As another side note, I had a funny text-conversation with my sister Sarah in our game of WordFeud {Scrabble for phones}.  It went something like this, after my having entered the word "TAXA":

  S:  What the crap is a taxa?
  M:  Taxa is the plural of taxon, as in taxonomy.  Today's Biology lesson is brought to you by the letter X.
  S:  Lame!!!!!  I hate biology!
  S:  It's like I'm watching PBS!

I think Dad would have been proud of me for that one.  So anyway, back to the blogging guidelines I am setting up for myself.  With the goal of writing every day {when I can be more than a hobbyist}, there should be weekly features.  Let's see if I can come up with some good ones now.
  • Musical Mondays.  Since I write a lot about music anyway, this could be good . . . except that now there has to be alliteration to my days of the week!  I guess I set myself up for that with the FF, which will go for . . .
  • Fabulous Factor Fridays.  This will be where I write about the fabulousness of the week.  This will also be a good reminder/measuring stick for if I am, indeed, more fabulous this week than the last.
  • Thrifty Thursdays.  I'm such a sucker for a good deal, I'm pretty happy when I find them.  I don't have time or energy to be a serious deal-finder or crazy coupon lady, but I appreciate that other people do!  I get daily e-mails from several of these people, and I think the most helpful one is Freebies2Deals.  They share some pretty great things, and I have gotten some killer deals thanks to them.  They are Utah-based, so a lot of the deals are local.  Even so, it's very worthwhile!  As an example, I got a box of cookies, two multi-packs of raisins, some wrapping paper and a pair of pants from Target for under $4 this week.  Oh yes, I'm that good.
  • Craft-tastic Tuesdays {doing things in order is way overrated}.  I can't come up with an alliteration for Tuesday; any suggestions?  This would make me accountable to actually do some of the crafts and projects of which I have so many: I'd have to have something new to show each week.  You know there just might be something to setting some SMART goals after all!
  • Wednesday . . . I'm not sure what to do; maybe "What-I'm-Reading Wednesday," or "Work-It Wednesday."  Then I'd have to be accountable for working out and actually doing good stuff for my body.  Unfortuately, I workwork 12-hour shifts every Wednesday, nor have I haven't really started exercising.  That one may have to wait, but it's definitely something to think about.
Hmm.  Maybe I'll try it this week.  Check back with me and we'll see how it goes!

The Way It Was

I'm in an "up" mood tonight.  I post a lot of downers, so this one may be a little off-the-wall.  At least it's happy-ish!

I'm currently in love with this song by The Killers.  I must have hit repeat 10 times on the way home from Dave & Lexy's this morning (post New Year's Eve family party--good times!).

I'm sure you wanted to know, but I'm currently wearing my Killers t-shirt.  I also wore it on Christmas, and my dad was a little dubious as to it's appropriateness.  Yeah, that was a little trashy, but it's a great shirt!  I'm not super-obsessed, but Battle Born is an incredible album, and I'm really enjoying listening to it.

As an aside, I went to see Les Misérables with my friend DeLayna today, and she totally knew that I was listening to Battle Born when I picked her up.  *sigh*  She's a girl after my own heart.  And Les Mis was incredible.  More on that later . . . although I may have to add Eddie Remayne to my list.  He was perfect as Marius.  {Don't worry--Hugh Jackman is already on it!}

Where was I going with this?  Um, I think I was going to write about the year.  Sometimes I can be a little scattered {surprise!}.  Yes, I know that {these} braces are for mathematical sets and not parenthesis, but: a)  they are pretty, b) I like them, and c) you can't do anything about it.  I suppose if I am mocked for using them, I may stop using them inappropriately.  Then again--maybe not.

Okay . . . I need to get to the point.  Here it is: 2012 was a pretty darn good year overall.  We went on a cruise, we went to a family reunion in Yosemite, Benji got into Pingree, we moved into a house, I got to spend time with wonderful mission friends, etc., etc.  There were some pretty low points too {like most of October}, but overall it was a winner winner chicken dinner.  I really don't know if 2013 can keep up.

I know this isn't a competition.  I usually avoid competing at all costs {I'd rather be a loser without having to display my pathetic attempts at whatever is being judged}.  That being said, I do want 2013 to kick some serious boo-tay.  I'm also a pretty poor goal-setter; I'm more of a day-to-day kind of girl, which really is terrible.  It leads to quickly abandoned resolutions and loads of justification in favor of doing what I have to do to get through the current situation.

Some other bloggers whom I admire tend to choose a word for the year.  One has chosen "Embrace" {sweet and admirable}, and another has chosen "Awesomer" {fun, but I can't choose a word that isn't really a word}.  I have never really felt the need to do that, until my lunch the other day with JJD and Peggy.  It was there that I realized what I want to be in 2013.

In order for this to happen . . . I have decided to change my mindset.  Maybe this will help me achieve more of my "goals," because they aren't really goals; they are things I have always wanted to do.  So instead of feeling guilty about not doing them, I am going to do them because they will help me be

{Have you figured out my word for the year?}

What do I need to do to be fabulous?  There a lot of ways to increase my fQ {Fabulous Quotient}.  I don't have to be incredibly specific, since one's fQ is totally subjective.  If I think it's fabulous, or if I think that's what fabulous people do, I'll do it.  For example:

Fabulous people have clean cars.  If I want to be fabulous, I'm going to keep my car clean.  It's a little thing, but I hate having a messy car, and I usually can't be bothered to clean it out unless someone besides my little dude will be riding in it.  Thus: not a goal, but something I can do that will help me feel better about myself and my crazy life.  The Iron Man would wonder why I don't make it into a SMART goal, by saying that I'll clean out my car once a week.  Why?  If I don't do it every week, I'll feel guilty and if I do it more than once per week, I'll feel the need to reward myself.  It doesn't need to be a goal.  It's something I want to do, and I'll do it when it needs to be done.

Another thing fabulous people do: they make time to exercise.  They take care of themselves because they know they look better and feel better when they do.  I get stuck in a rut of exercising for a little while, then giving up because I'm too busy or too tired, and then I feel bad about myself for not doing it, etc.  It's a very self-defeating cycle to be in, and I'm done. I will exercise when I need to, because it will help me become more fabulous.  I'm not going to say I'll do it everyday {because I know I won't}.  I'm not going to say I'm going to lose 100 lbs this year like my sister Rachael {because it's not about numbers, it's about how I feel}. Mach--more power to you girl.  I mean no offense to people who do have great New Years Resolutions, they just aren't for me.

I am going to try to do at least one fabulous thing every day to increase my fQ.  That may be as simple as putting on makeup, or it may be creating some fantastic home decor; eating a salad instead of pizza or getting a pedicure.  It may be just surviving the day without strangling my husband or yelling at my child.

I want to feel better about myself.  I want to feel like there is good in my life, that there are beautiful things within my reach.  I want to let go of the inner frump and be someone that other people see and think, "Huh.  She's kind-of fabulous."  Is this a worthy goal?  Probably not.  Is it superficial?  Absolutely.  Are there more important things I should be worried about?  Definitely.  But it's something I actually want to do, and it's an unmeasurable state of being, i.e., I won't totally fail like I usually do.  It will help me be confident enough to try for bigger and better things, so I think it is worthwhile.

So there you have it: my New Years Resolution.  It's pretty much the best thing ever.  Seriously.

31 December 2012

I Need a Little Fabulous

So . . . I just got LASIK.  In my right eye.  It is pretty fantastic, except that my vision is all screwed up, and I'm not supposed to wear a contact (singular!), and I thought that getting a clear plastic lens in my glasses would do the trick.  Uh, no.  I'm going to have to get new lenses in order to see over the next few weeks, after which I may dispose of said glasses.  No happy medium.  That's a little annoying.

I had it done on Friday afternoon, and that day pretty much sucked.  I also knew that I was on-call on Saturday, and the ferns down at Hoopes told me I wasn't supposed to drive or work until after my follow-up appointment on Saturday morning.  I tried to sleep that night, but ended up waking up every few hours to pee (and put in eye drops . . . the number of drops is unbelievable!!).  And then, at 6:30am, I get a call from my friend Gary: I had to go into work.  So, being very low on options at that point, I a) put a contact lens in my eye and b) drove myself to work.  I have been trying so hard to be a good patient!  I totally blew it on Saturday morning, though.  While driving, my head started pounding.  All of this messing with my vision has been giving me some killer headaches, which is getting really old.  I got into work, walked up to the desk, and Marilyn said, "Welcome.  You'll be doing a pelvis fracture in room 19 with Dr. Hillyard."  Well, that's not the worst thing in the world, but I just knew I wasn't going to be able to make it.  I told her I wasn't feeling well, so she called in a nurse to take my place.  I did try to get it all set up for her, which was just lovely as well.  Mind you, many regular cases need 1 or 2 sets of instruments; Ortho cases tend to take 5-9 sets.  Pelivs fractures with Hillyard?  I opened at least 15 sets, and I'm not sure I even had everything I needed.  Seriously.  Dr. Hillyard is very nice and patient, but also extremely meticulous (i.e., slow).  The case had been scheduled for 6 hours, and I think that was a pretty optimistic estimate.  Anyway, Susan came in to relieve me around 8:45am, so I left quickly and drove myself to my follow-up appointment.  Luckily, no one questioned me about arriving alone.  They did tell me to buy some more drops (because, apparently, I didn't have enough already), so I went to Target in search of some thicker artificial tears.  Who knew there was such a variety!?

I had taken some ibuprofen, so my headache was a bit better by then.  Even so, I spent a good 20 minutes in Target comparing brands and trying to find an acceptable substitute for what he told me to get (since they didn't have the exact one).  I also looked around the Christmas clearance aisles and found some fantastic stockings at half-price.  Yay!  I may actually get stockings up next year!

At this point, it was noon, and I was scheduled to meet my mission friends Peggy and Jack Jason for lunch at 1pm.  Because I had rolled out of bed at 6:30 to go to work, I looked pretty darn frumpy.  I was wearing scrub pants and my Train concert t-shirt, snow boots, a parka, a pathetic messy bun and zero makeup (per surgery instructions).  Here's the thing--if I were only meeting Peggy, I wouldn't care (girlfriend has seen me at my absolute worst).  But Jason (or JJD) is probably the most FABULOUS person I know.  I haven't seen him in years, probably since before I got married.  He is a lawyer in Washington D.C., we are Facebook friends and I recently discovered his incredible blog ("I live vicariously through you, remember?"), so I was thrilled when he messaged me and Peggy, asking us if we wanted to get together while he was here over Christmas.  Um, yes!!  {That may or may not have been another reason for me to be *sick* and leave work early on Saturday.  I plead the 5th.}

I didn't have time to go all the way home and change, so I stopped in at Ulta and purchased some combs and makeup.  I was not going to be totally embarrassed!  I dressed up the messy bun a bit with a braid, and put on some face makeup and blush (no eye makeup--I have been good about that!).  With that, I drove to Sugarhouse and we had a delightful lunch @ Finn's Cafe.  We had a server take an iPhone picture, which really did none of us any favors.  I was going to suggest a different spot for lighting purposes, but decided to go with it.  So this is what we got:

I'm holding a Diet Coke given to us "to go" (do you think that was a subtle hint?!); I'm not giving Peggy the bird on purpose.  Also, JJD has very nice hair, but this picture makes him look almost bald!  I tried to edit the picture, which looks marginally better and slightly BoBo thanks to the filters.

Jason is amazing.  He's sophisticated and hilarious and fashionable and, well, FABULOUS.  I adore him.  I adore Peggy too, but I can see her pretty much anytime.  Seeing Jason is such a rare treat--he's always working crazy 120-hour weeks, going to plays, taking crazy trips all around the world, and reading Les Misérables in the original french.  I want to be like him when I grow up.

At some point during our conversation, I requested an explanation of Jason and Peggy's method of judging people.  They had a code I didn't understand, but since they are up front about it and honest about where they fall within the scheme, it's okay.  Jason drew me a diagram on the back of the receipt.  It looked something like this (with fonts added for emphasis):

Let me explain.  No--there is too much.  Let me sum up: the people you know can basically be classified into one of these four categories.  I cringe as I write this, but the humor and the element of truth make it worthwhile.

F-people: like to use the F-bomb a lot.  If there were a t.v. show that describes an F-person, it would be "My Name is Earl" (with Maury Povich coming in a close second).  Mullets, NASCAR, trailers, etc.  FYI--Peggy likes to let her inner F-chick shine.

Peace people: Hippies.  Birkenstocks.  The entire state of Oregon.  NPR.  All about recycling.  I assert that anyone who graduates from the University of Utah have to be "Peace People" to a certain extent.  I'm not a serious Peace girl, but I was a Biology major: there was no escaping them.  I'm sure you get the idea.

D&D (or Dungeons and Dragons):  The nerds.  Big Bang Theory.  Computer, techie people who love Sci-Fi and are fairly anti-social.  Peggy says I'm totally D&D (even though I didn't know what D&D stood for--she had to explain it to me).  Just because I'm a Star Wars nerd . . . whatever.

And last but not least, BoBo (or Bohemian Bourgeoisie): The posh.  Frasier.  Drive a Lexus or a Saab.  Wouldn't be caught dead at Walmart, etc.

The whole conversation was a pleasure.  I laughed.  A LOT.  But I have been considering the diagram.  These categories are pretty basic, and I think there has to be some overlap.  I like to think of myself as kind-of a centrist (politically, socially, etc.).  I may be mostly D&D, but I'm cool with F-people.  I definitely prefer Target to Walmart, but that doesn't make me entirely BoBo.  I'm not the most avid Peace girl, but I recycle and I do think about the environment.

So this is where my New Year's resolution intersects with my friends' theories:

I will be a different kind of F chick, where F is for FABULOUS.  More to come (and Happy New Year!).
