When She Puts Her Eyes On

It's so time to go to bed.  I said I was going to write every day, and I wanted to have something to write about today for
I decided to go with "Tutorial Tuesday" instead of "Craft-tastic Tuesday," since it would give me more freedom to do tutorials on things other than crafts.  It's also a better alliteration.  I have been wanting to make a skirt for a while, and since I had today off of work, I thought this would be a great day to tackle this project.

Unfortunately, I GROSSLY overestimated my sewing abilities.  Even now, I think it shouldn't be nearly as difficult as it has been.  And that was just the cutting out part!  I finally have the pieces cut out, and now at nearly 2am, I'm so over it.  I'll try to sew it tomorrow, since I actually want to wear it this weekend.  If it turns out to be wearable, I may post the pictures.  Actually, once I get over the annoyance, it will probably be pretty funny {as a sort-of Anti-Tutorial, or "What not to do when dealing with knit fabrics"}.  Maybe next week; maybe never.

Since I would like to post something, I'll pull out these pictures.  I took them last April, as a justification for all of the makeup I purchase and use.   Most of these pictures are pretty unflattering and unretouched, but it is what it is.  I hope you can see the transformation that occurs when I put makeup on, and why I feel so much more confident when wearing it.

**I'm not trying to sell anything; I briefly considered selling Mary Kay, but I can't be married to one brand of cosmetics.  Plus, most of them are so pushy, and I hate sales.  I really, really, really hate sales.  That's one big reason why I work in a hospital.

Anyway...here's my face with zero makeup.  Horrible.

Zits, uneven skin-tone, perpetual dark circles, oily, etc.  Ugh.  So I usually start with a moisturizer.  I have been using Olay Complete Moisturizer for a while; it's okay.  I prefer Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel {for oily skin}, but Olay is a lot cheaper.  And I guess it does the job.  I'll put it on first thing in the morning, and give it a few minutes to soak in.  I'll usually work on my hair or eat breakfast or something, then come back.

I didn't take a picture of it, but I'll put on a primer after moisturizing.  Some people think it's a waste of time, and many prefer a BB cream, which includes a primer, but for me, any primer makes a huge difference.  It makes my skin look amazing.   A primer that I really love is Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer.

I have been using mostly liquid foundations recently, though I do like Bare Minerals Original powder foundation too.  The problem with Bare Minerals is that my skin tone falls between two different shades, so I have to buy two pots and mix them.  And at $27 apiece, that's a pretty hefty investment.  It lasts for a long time, but when you can get a liquid for $7 at Target, it's worth it.  Also, as an FYI, I have tried a lot of different mineral makeups, and none of them are as good as Bare Minerals for coverage, feel, texture, etc.  This is using liquid makeup; I'm currently using Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse, which I really like.  I almost always need the lightest shade available since I'm so freaking white, but I also have to be careful with warm vs. neutral vs. cool shades.  I need everything to be very neutral--any orange or blue undertones look terrible on me!

Better, but still pretty pale.  I haven't found any concealers that have changed my life, so I'll usually just go with a full-coverage foundation.  Anyway, I then put on some blush.  This first step is Ulta's Extreme Wear Mousse Blush in Nude Glow {or as I like to call it, "Healthy Glow"}.  Throw some on, and voilĂ : I don't look like a corpse.

Um, in case you hadn't noticed, I really suck at taking pictures of myself.  Anyway, sometimes I'll follow up with some bronzer.  I'm not super-attached to bronzers, though if I found a really good one I might use it all the time.  The one I have now is Maybelline Mineral Power Bronzer.  It's nothing to write home about.

I'll put it pretty much all over, but use it sparingly.  I have had to wipe it off and start over sometimes when applied too heavily.  Let's do a quick review.

Then--and I think this is the most important part of the whole routine--come the eyebrows.  Having well-defined eyebrows makes a huge difference in one's face.  Some people use powder, others use mascara, but I like a pencil.  I use the Beautique Blonde pencil from Sally Beauty Supply.  It's cheap and it does the job.  I also use the Beautique silver pencil sharpener to get a really nice point on it.

Now, compare that with photo #1 {no makeup}.  I have very little natural arch, so I like the pencil to define it.  Pretty amazing, eh?  Definitely worth the time.

I have used stencils before, which can be helpful with shape, but I usually just freehand it.  I also tweeze my  eyebrows myself.  I had them waxed once, and she honestly didn't do much.  A couple of hints: don't overpluck {ask me how I know!}, and look for your natural arch.  It's supposed to hit in a direct line from your nose, through your iris, kind-of like this.

Here's a much better explanation than I can give.  There are plenty of resources on the internet, so go get 'em.  I need to move on.

Sometimes I do an eyeshadow primer like this one.  It does help with color, especially when you have perpetual dark circles around your eyes like me.  It also helps prevent smudging and caking.

Then comes eyeshadow.  My eyeshadow routines vary; this picture is using a gold and purple palette from Clinique Bonus Week {that's the ONLY time I buy anything from Clinique!}.  I don't get too crazy with colors; I generally stay pretty neutral.  I'm currently in love with Ulta eyeshadows.

Here's a pretty good tutorial for eyeshadow.  I'll usually do an all-over neutral color {like Ulta's Lustre}, highlight the browbones and inner corner of the lids with something lighter {currently using Ulta's Naked}, create some depth with a brown in the outer corners, and sometimes put a shimmer over the top.  Ulta's Glitter Eye Topcoat in Fairy Princess is my newest favorite thing.  I LOVE IT.

A note about brushes: I have a bunch, but pretty much use just one similar to this for all of my eyeshadow purposes.  Spongy applicators are okay, but they get cakey and don't blend very well.

I'll usually do an eyeliner {no particular brand; whatever is cheap}.  This one is a brown pencil; the color will depend on my mood.  Sometimes it's a black eyeliner kind of day; sometimes I'll use a liquid for a cat-eye effect, sometimes just on the upper lid, sometimes all the way around.  Other times I'll skip it all together.  I can't imagine getting eyeliner tattooed.  To be stuck with one color and one style {not to mention having those needles that close to your eye!  Yikes!} is not cool.  Play with it; have fun!

And the last step is mascara.  I go through different brands, trying to find the ultimate all-in-one.  I have yet to find it.  Often I'll go with two different ones--one for lengthening {first coat}, and one for volume {second coat}.  My usual is two coats on top and one coat on bottom.

I'm currently using CoverGirl Lash Blast in Black.  It's okay.  I really like Benefit's "They're Real!" and Clinique's High Impact Mascara.  Even so, I'm still on the lookout for the mascara that will change my life.  Let me know if you've found one!

Sometimes I'll add another {pinker} blush and/or a translucent powder over the top of everything {like this one I got from Big Lots for $3}.  Sometimes I'll do something with my lips, but more often than not I'll throw on some lip gloss.  I don't have a favorite brand of lip gloss; I like some flavor and sparkle and a little bit of {neutral or pink} color.  The Beauty Rush collection from Victoria's Secret has some that are really nice, particularly "Slice of Heaven."  I also like Bath & Body Works Liplicious has some good ones, too.  I'll usually have several flavors in my purse.  Also, when I give my Benji kisses, he'll usually lick his lips afterward because it tastes good!  He has destroyed entire tubes for the same reason.  You win some, you lose some.

And that's about it.  Here's a before and after:

Yes, it's a lot of effort; it usually takes me about 10 minutes.  But it really does make me feel better about myself.  It boosts my confidence and it's kind-of an artistic outlet for me.  I think most women fall in who don't wear makeup don't need it.  I admire them, but as for me--I'm super-duper frumpy without it.  And since I'm trying to be FABULOUS, makeup is a pretty obvious part of that for me.

Wow, that took a lot longer than I had anticipated.  I may have to skip Work-It Wednesday, but since nobody but me cares, it's not a big deal, right?  Right.  Good night/morning.

The Songs In Your Head Are Now On My Mind

All right, friends.  I am going to write every day this week, using the "guidelines" I set up in my last post.  I even made up fancy little headers, in case this becomes a habit.  I'm hoping it will, since writing with a prompt seems much easier than just spewing out all of the nonsense in my brain.  Of course, that's what I have been doing for the past five years {for which you are very welcome}.   I'll try not to be too long-winded, since I want to finish a very good book tonight and it's already midnight.  So here is the very first edition of:
I have several thoughts to share, but I think it only fitting that I should start with my favorite band in the world, U2.  Since one of my goals this year is to turn my sister-in-law into a U2 fan {just you wait, Lexy, it WILL happen!}, this is a good place to start.  This is a picture of the band in their very early days {circa 1980}.

{all photos courtesy of U2.com}
This is one from The Joshua Tree, one of their finest and most highly-acclaimed albums {including "Where The Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," and "With or Without You"}.  Personally, I think this era was where they all looked their best.  This picture is from 1987.  Mmmm.

{L-R: Edge, Bono, Adam, and Larry}
Here's one from "Achtung Baby," my favorite album {circa 1991}

Nothing lasts forever, even cold November rain.  I think everyone agrees that "Pop" was one of their low-points.  Exhibit A {around 1997}:

They haven't aged very gracefully, but as incredible as their music was in the 80's, I believe it has gotten better.  This is a picture from "All That You Can't Leave Behind," one of my favorite albums {circa 2000}.

And this is from around 2009, in conjunction with their last album, "No Line On The Horizon."

My point in posting all of these pictures is this: they are still together.  They formed in 1978 as teenagers in Ireland, and 35 years later, with all of them in their 50's, they are still together.  They have all grown up together, making their lives together, forging a brotherhood.  It's more than a band, it's a family.  There have been many times where they came close to breaking up, and there have been plenty of fights and yelling, etc.  There have been a few solo projects here and there, but they always come back to the group: it's where they want to be.  The whole is much stronger than the individual, and it's one of my favorite things about these men.  They know they can't do it alone, so they rely on each other to do what they do best--create incredible music.

I think we can all learn a lesson from a band who wouldn't give up.  For a short biography, please read here.

P.S.  At the risk of sounding too preachy, I would like to include this in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, whose birthday and legacy were celebrated today:

"Sleep, sleep tonight
And may your dreams be realised.
If the thunder cloud passes rain
So let it rain, rain down on he.
So let it be.
So let it be."

{MLK, from the album "The Unforgettable Fire" by U2 (1984)}

I Gotta Feeling

Getting organized is a big deal.  I'm still working on getting our house organized; it is mostly there, but there is a serious lack of shelving.  As such, things end up in random corners, or stuck in our very cold garage {which is doubling as a walk-in freezer of late . . . perfect for chilling beverages!}.  I did go to IKEA with Peggy and Brittany as part of my girls' day out birthday celebration {followed by a late lunch @ Texas Roadhouse and Les MisĂ©rables @ Jordan Landing, all of which was lovely except for the part where Benji pooped his pants and I nearly broke the diaper-changing station in the bathroom by putting my 65lb boy on it}, and bought some super-cheap shelves for the kitchen.  No, I haven't hung them yet; I need a stud-finder and a level.   I need to get some real shelves for my office and for the family room.  We also need a couch and an entertainment center that doesn't involve cardboard.  Actually, we have a weird corner in the family room that needs to be turned into a closet, so we'd need shelves and lighting and doors . . . and the list goes on and on.  There is a lot to do, and not enough time or money to do it.  Apparently there are always projects when one has a house; and don't even get me started on the yard situation.  This is good and bad, but I'm very grateful to even have a house in which I can do projects.

There are a lot of other aspects of my life I would like to organize, and not just in a plastic-bin sort of way {though bins can be extremely helpful!}.  Fabulous people are organized, so I should be, too!  As a side note, I was just looking down at my very dry and unpretty hands.  Fabulous people take care of their nails, and since a) I get paid this week and b) it's my birthday on Saturday, I will be getting a mani-pedi at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Okay, back to the purpose of my writing at this very late hour.  I'm actually at work, and it is quiet tonight {yay!}.  I should be "putting my feet up," or preparing my lesson for Primary tomorrow, but I'd rather write.  I have been bitten by the writing bug, and there's a lot I want to say.  Eventually I'd like to become one of those bloggers who actually get paid to write, though I don't see that happening for some time; at least until I have something I can sell besides my wit and honesty.

Until I can get into a real writing routine, I'd like to set some goals to help me get organized.  Yes, yes, I said I wasn't setting number goals, and I won't be measuring these.  They are more like guidelines, anyway {please tell me you know that quote!}.

My goal is to write once per week.  For journaling purposes, I think I should do a Weekend Wrap-Up {"What is a week-end?" --the Dowager Countess} to write about what actually happened during that period of time.  It's mostly work, school, cleaning, laundry, etc., but there are the occasional great things that tend to get missed, like my road trip to Boise last week with Allison.  That was a first; I have never gone to such significant lengths to go to a concert, but is was so great!  There's also the Fabulous Factor {FF}.  I think I'll go from using the fQ {Fabulousness Quotient} to the FF.  fQ sounds precariously close to something I really shouldn't say, and I can leave out the -ness when using FF.  Just to clarify--I am using Fabulous as a noun, not an adjective, since "Fabulous" is a state-of-being.  As another side note, I had a funny text-conversation with my sister Sarah in our game of WordFeud {Scrabble for phones}.  It went something like this, after my having entered the word "TAXA":

  S:  What the crap is a taxa?
  M:  Taxa is the plural of taxon, as in taxonomy.  Today's Biology lesson is brought to you by the letter X.
  S:  Lame!!!!!  I hate biology!
  S:  It's like I'm watching PBS!

I think Dad would have been proud of me for that one.  So anyway, back to the blogging guidelines I am setting up for myself.  With the goal of writing every day {when I can be more than a hobbyist}, there should be weekly features.  Let's see if I can come up with some good ones now.
  • Musical Mondays.  Since I write a lot about music anyway, this could be good . . . except that now there has to be alliteration to my days of the week!  I guess I set myself up for that with the FF, which will go for . . .
  • Fabulous Factor Fridays.  This will be where I write about the fabulousness of the week.  This will also be a good reminder/measuring stick for if I am, indeed, more fabulous this week than the last.
  • Thrifty Thursdays.  I'm such a sucker for a good deal, I'm pretty happy when I find them.  I don't have time or energy to be a serious deal-finder or crazy coupon lady, but I appreciate that other people do!  I get daily e-mails from several of these people, and I think the most helpful one is Freebies2Deals.  They share some pretty great things, and I have gotten some killer deals thanks to them.  They are Utah-based, so a lot of the deals are local.  Even so, it's very worthwhile!  As an example, I got a box of cookies, two multi-packs of raisins, some wrapping paper and a pair of pants from Target for under $4 this week.  Oh yes, I'm that good.
  • Craft-tastic Tuesdays {doing things in order is way overrated}.  I can't come up with an alliteration for Tuesday; any suggestions?  This would make me accountable to actually do some of the crafts and projects of which I have so many: I'd have to have something new to show each week.  You know there just might be something to setting some SMART goals after all!
  • Wednesday . . . I'm not sure what to do; maybe "What-I'm-Reading Wednesday," or "Work-It Wednesday."  Then I'd have to be accountable for working out and actually doing good stuff for my body.  Unfortuately, I workwork 12-hour shifts every Wednesday, nor have I haven't really started exercising.  That one may have to wait, but it's definitely something to think about.
Hmm.  Maybe I'll try it this week.  Check back with me and we'll see how it goes!

Maybe This'll Be My Year

2012 was a pretty big year chez moi. I started this a few days ago, but it has finally come together.  I'm stealing this "Year in Review" survey from "The New Me."    Enjoy, and feel free to write your own.  It does make you think about your year!

1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
   Go on a Disney Cruise!

2. Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
   Negative, Ghost Rider. I lasted about 6 weeks off the Diet Coke. For 2013, I resolve to be fabulous...and to turn Lexy into a U2 fan.  I've been thinking about it, and I do need some concrete goals.  As such, I will read at least 12 books, and I will blog at least once per week.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
   Actually, no. Several Facebook friends, a couple of coworkers, and my cousin Heather gave birth, but no babies in the immediate family.  We did acquire two dogs (Zoe and Joey, or ZoZo and JoJo) who are treated like babies by the kiddos.  They are pretty cute.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
   No. I'm very thankful for that. Several big celebrities died this year, like Whitney Houston, Dick Clark, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Clarke Duncan.

5. What places did you visit?
    California (twice), Puerta Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
   More time with loved ones...and more money.

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched in your memory, and why?
   February 26th--the day we embarked on the Disney Wonder.  The only other day I can really think of is November 6--the day of the presidential election.  There was so much build-up and serious depression afterward, it was kind-of a big deal.  I'm over it now, and I'm extremely grateful election season is done for a while.  I HATE IT.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
   Getting us into a house.  I don't believe Allen would have done it without a lot of pushing and cajoling on my part, so I'm pretty proud of that.

9. What was your biggest failure?
   Christmas cards. I had every intention of getting real family pictures taken, designing my own cards, getting them printed, personalized with hand-written notes, shipped, addressed, and mailed out in early December. Cards really are a huge project, and it just didn't happen. I did make a little subway art type newsletter, which I thought turned out nicely.  Here is the card I made; it is not the one we sent out, because I ran out of time (surprise!).  The one we sent out was a Costco special; I WILL start earlier this year!

  I really liked it, so don't be surprised if you see something similar next year...I'm just sayin'.  Oh--and here's the newsletter:

10: Did you suffer illness or injury?
   Nothing big like the shoulder injury last year, but I did have a couple of nasty colds, one combined with a stomach flu. I think I missed about a week of work with that incident.  Definitely moins efficace.

 11. What was the best thing you bought?
   The "Golden Ticket" to see {and meet!} Train @ the Gallivan Center. I paid a fair amount of money for that spot on the front-row. Totally worth it.

12. Who's behavior merited celebration?
   I can't think of anyone whose behavior has been exemplary; certainly not me. I'll give this award to Benji. His progress is definitely reason to celebrate. He is looking me in the eye much more often, using a couple of complete sentences {with prompting}, using the potty most of the time, and even following some directions. I am so proud of my little man.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
   I'm going to go with every politician in Washington. I don't have faith in any of 'em, especially Monsieur le President.

14. Where did most of your money go?
   Bills, and the gas tank.

15. What did you get really excited about?
   Concerts! Having someone to go with makes it much more fun. Love you, Allison!  Here's a picture from our latest outing {road-trip to Boise with Allison's son Cameron and his friend Dawson, to see Keane @ the Knitting Factory}:

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
   "We Are Young" by fun. It's not my favorite song of the year, but it got a lot of air play.  I should do a Mary's Top Ten countdown of the year.  Here you go:

  10.  I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons {they were so great on SNL!}
   9.  50 Ways To Say Goodbye by Train
   8.  Shake It Out by Florence + The Machine
   7.  We Are Young by fun.
   6.  Skyfall by Adele
   5.  It's Time by Imagine Dragons
   4.  Tongue Tied by Grouplove
   3.  Cough Syrup by Young the Giant {though I think I like the Glee version better.  Heartbreaking.}
   2.  Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye
   1.  Some Nights by fun.

I did not include songs from the Albums of the Year {Strangeland by Keane and Battle Born by The Killers}, because there are so many good songs that it's impossible to narrow it down.  Sorry!

As for the worst song of the year?  "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen.  It may have been one of the most popular songs of the year, but I can't stand it.  I have tried listening to it and haven't made it all the way through.  I feel myself losing brain cells every time I hear it.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
   a. happier or sadder? About the same, but in different ways. I'm happier with where I am, but some days, certain situations get to me.
   b. thinner or fatter? Probably fatter.  I try to avoid the scale whenever possible.
   c. richer or poorer?  I make more money, but there seems to be less of it.  Thank you, homeownership.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
   I always wish I had written more, read more, and saved more money.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
   Mindless internet surfing, especially on Pinterest. I have a real problem with letting hours slip away while I click links that add absolutely nothing to my life.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
   With my family in Logan.  It was too short, but it was lovely and white.

21. Did you fall in love in 2012?
  With Keane?  Yes.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
   We don't have cable, so I can't keep up with new shows very well.  I did discover the Hulu+, so I can watch Grey's Anatomy and Glee when they come out.  Other shows I have watched {which are available on Netflix}: How I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad, and Arrested Development.  I can't watch a lot of shows, because once I start I can't stop.  Oh--scratch all of that.  My favorite TV program is Downton Abbey.  Done.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate at this time last year?
   Not anyone I know personally, just politicians in general.

24. What was the best book you read?
   Probably The Hunger Games Trilogy, I believe.  I haven't read a lot this year, unfortunately.

25. What music did you get excited about?
   Do you read my blog?  I write a lot about music.  Keane, especially.  They are just so great.  I have liked the Killers for a while, but I haven't ever owned any of their albums until I went to the concert in November.  I am really crushing on them now, too.  Some Glee songs really stick with me, like Cough Syrup.  "How Will I Know?" in the Whitney Houston episode was incredible.  You get to know these characters, and then songs they sing remind you of them.

26. What did you want and get?
  A house!

27. What did you want and not get?
   An iPad.  :o(

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
   There were lots of good ones; I saw the following in the theater: The Hunger Games (very well done), Marvel's The Avengers (excellent), Rock of Ages (fun), The Dark Knight Rises (unbelievably good), Lincoln (beautiful), The Amazing Spider-Man (not too bad), Dark Shadows (meh), John Carter (um, okay?), Pitch Perfect (so flippin' funny!), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (awesome), and One For The Money (lame).  Best Picture award goes to The Dark Knight.  Best Actress goes to Jennifer Lawrence for Hunger Games.  Best Actor goes to Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln.  I would say that Les Miserables was my favorite movie, but I saw it on New Year's Day (and again yesterday).

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
  I turned 33 on January 26h.  I'm pretty sure I worked that day; honestly, I don't remember.

30. What one thing would have made your year more satisfying?
   Better time management.  I struggle with it.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
  I love neutrals.  I have been trying to be more feminine with lace, flowers, jewelry, accessories, etc.  Then it gets cold and I get lazy, and I just end up wearing jeans and long-sleeve shirts.  BO-RING.  I'll tell you the one fashion trend I'm all over: Maxi Skirts.  LOVE THEM.  A good skirt can hide a multitude of flaws.  And I plan on wearing them for a long time, baby.

32. What kept you sane?
   My social agenda.  Without the visits to friends and family, spending time with Sam and Jason, the craft days and the concerts, the dinners and random texts and facebook, I would be a very depressed woman.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
   "Fancy" is an interesting word.  My #1 celebrity crush is still Patrick Wilson, and I was very sad when his show "A Gifted Man" was cancelled.  I'll have to go through the list on the blog someday.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
   The economy.  It sucks, and it's getting suckier.  It's really the only thing that directly affects me.  I do get a little riled up over gay marriage, and how I should be against it but I can't be.  I'll save that discussion for another post; this one is long enough already.

35. Whom did you miss?
   I'll tell you who I'm glad is back in my life: Brittany.  I adore this girl, and she has been MIA for several years.  I finally got her back in my loop when Sam was here from Germany.  She is such a lovely person.  There are other people whom I miss, but I'm pretty sure they don't think about me, so I'm not wasting much time thinking about them.

36. Who was the best new person you met?
   She's not technically a new person, but I have gotten to know my work friend Lacey a lot better this year.  We've had some good talks, and we got pedicures together once.  We need to do that again!  Love her!

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
   "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."  Oh, Ferris--you are so wise.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
   For the bad times:
      "Each heart is a paper kite blown around by the breeze
       Love won't rest till it brings you to your knees
       Some find it easy, some will never even know
       You think you've done your journey,
       Then you stumble and find that there's such a long way to go."
       {from: The Starting Line, by Keane}
   For the good times:
       "Maybe this'll be my year."  {by Train}

And there you have it.  It's probably more than you ever wanted to know about me.  Here's to 2013!

02 January 2013

The Way It Was

I'm in an "up" mood tonight.  I post a lot of downers, so this one may be a little off-the-wall.  At least it's happy-ish!

I'm currently in love with this song by The Killers.  I must have hit repeat 10 times on the way home from Dave & Lexy's this morning (post New Year's Eve family party--good times!).

I'm sure you wanted to know, but I'm currently wearing my Killers t-shirt.  I also wore it on Christmas, and my dad was a little dubious as to it's appropriateness.  Yeah, that was a little trashy, but it's a great shirt!  I'm not super-obsessed, but Battle Born is an incredible album, and I'm really enjoying listening to it.

As an aside, I went to see Les MisĂ©rables with my friend DeLayna today, and she totally knew that I was listening to Battle Born when I picked her up.  *sigh*  She's a girl after my own heart.  And Les Mis was incredible.  More on that later . . . although I may have to add Eddie Remayne to my list.  He was perfect as Marius.  {Don't worry--Hugh Jackman is already on it!}

Where was I going with this?  Um, I think I was going to write about the year.  Sometimes I can be a little scattered {surprise!}.  Yes, I know that {these} braces are for mathematical sets and not parenthesis, but: a)  they are pretty, b) I like them, and c) you can't do anything about it.  I suppose if I am mocked for using them, I may stop using them inappropriately.  Then again--maybe not.

Okay . . . I need to get to the point.  Here it is: 2012 was a pretty darn good year overall.  We went on a cruise, we went to a family reunion in Yosemite, Benji got into Pingree, we moved into a house, I got to spend time with wonderful mission friends, etc., etc.  There were some pretty low points too {like most of October}, but overall it was a winner winner chicken dinner.  I really don't know if 2013 can keep up.

I know this isn't a competition.  I usually avoid competing at all costs {I'd rather be a loser without having to display my pathetic attempts at whatever is being judged}.  That being said, I do want 2013 to kick some serious boo-tay.  I'm also a pretty poor goal-setter; I'm more of a day-to-day kind of girl, which really is terrible.  It leads to quickly abandoned resolutions and loads of justification in favor of doing what I have to do to get through the current situation.

Some other bloggers whom I admire tend to choose a word for the year.  One has chosen "Embrace" {sweet and admirable}, and another has chosen "Awesomer" {fun, but I can't choose a word that isn't really a word}.  I have never really felt the need to do that, until my lunch the other day with JJD and Peggy.  It was there that I realized what I want to be in 2013.

In order for this to happen . . . I have decided to change my mindset.  Maybe this will help me achieve more of my "goals," because they aren't really goals; they are things I have always wanted to do.  So instead of feeling guilty about not doing them, I am going to do them because they will help me be

{Have you figured out my word for the year?}

What do I need to do to be fabulous?  There a lot of ways to increase my fQ {Fabulous Quotient}.  I don't have to be incredibly specific, since one's fQ is totally subjective.  If I think it's fabulous, or if I think that's what fabulous people do, I'll do it.  For example:

Fabulous people have clean cars.  If I want to be fabulous, I'm going to keep my car clean.  It's a little thing, but I hate having a messy car, and I usually can't be bothered to clean it out unless someone besides my little dude will be riding in it.  Thus: not a goal, but something I can do that will help me feel better about myself and my crazy life.  The Iron Man would wonder why I don't make it into a SMART goal, by saying that I'll clean out my car once a week.  Why?  If I don't do it every week, I'll feel guilty and if I do it more than once per week, I'll feel the need to reward myself.  It doesn't need to be a goal.  It's something I want to do, and I'll do it when it needs to be done.

Another thing fabulous people do: they make time to exercise.  They take care of themselves because they know they look better and feel better when they do.  I get stuck in a rut of exercising for a little while, then giving up because I'm too busy or too tired, and then I feel bad about myself for not doing it, etc.  It's a very self-defeating cycle to be in, and I'm done. I will exercise when I need to, because it will help me become more fabulous.  I'm not going to say I'll do it everyday {because I know I won't}.  I'm not going to say I'm going to lose 100 lbs this year like my sister Rachael {because it's not about numbers, it's about how I feel}. Mach--more power to you girl.  I mean no offense to people who do have great New Years Resolutions, they just aren't for me.

I am going to try to do at least one fabulous thing every day to increase my fQ.  That may be as simple as putting on makeup, or it may be creating some fantastic home decor; eating a salad instead of pizza or getting a pedicure.  It may be just surviving the day without strangling my husband or yelling at my child.

I want to feel better about myself.  I want to feel like there is good in my life, that there are beautiful things within my reach.  I want to let go of the inner frump and be someone that other people see and think, "Huh.  She's kind-of fabulous."  Is this a worthy goal?  Probably not.  Is it superficial?  Absolutely.  Are there more important things I should be worried about?  Definitely.  But it's something I actually want to do, and it's an unmeasurable state of being, i.e., I won't totally fail like I usually do.  It will help me be confident enough to try for bigger and better things, so I think it is worthwhile.

So there you have it: my New Years Resolution.  It's pretty much the best thing ever.  Seriously.
